Challenge
CatSci Ltd needed to accelerate the optimisation of pharmaceutical reactions, a process that was previously slow and labour-intensive. Without automation, resources were tied up in manual experiments, limiting throughput and flexibility. To overcome this, CatSci aimed to establish a dedicated High-Throughput Screening (HTS) department supported by reliable automation.
Solution
Labman provided the MultiDose solid-handling system, offering precise, flexible integration with CatSci’s existing workflows.
Results
The MultiDose system reduced optimisation time by around fourfold and increased experimental capacity dramatically. A single chemist can now manage 150–200 reactions, with the goal of exceeding 1,000 reactions per week once the HTS department is fully operational. Continuous overnight operation has further boosted efficiency and output.

CatSci Ltd specialises in developing processes for novel pharmaceuticals and active compounds. A significant part of their work involves scouting optimised conditions for each reaction within a process. Without automation, this was labour-intensive and time-consuming, often diverting time and resources from other crucial aspects of development. To address this, they invested in establishing a High-Throughput Screening (HTS) department, enabling them to efficiently, screen early-stage conditions and free up resources.

The team at CatSci needed a reliable solid-handling solution that operated independently from their liquid handler and reactors. Partnering with Labman, CatSci implemented the MultiDose solid-handling system as the foundation of its new HTS department.

Since installation, the MultiDose has transformed CatSci’s laboratory efficiency. Early experiments show a fourfold reduction in optimisation time, allowing more extensive screening and faster process development. The system’s ability to operate autonomously overnight and on weekends maximises instrument uptime.

“The ability to weigh solids overnight and at weekends maximises instrument uptime, significantly boosting overall reaction output.”

MultiDose underpins CatSci’s High-Throughput Screening department and serves as the foundation for integrating machine learning and data-driven decision-making into process development. By combining Labman’s automation with in-house machine learning models, CatSci aims to accelerate route scouting and process development, giving clients access to faster, more robust, and scalable solutions.

“Labman’s system will be pivotal for our long-term strategy. As the foundation of our High-Throughput Screening (HTS) work, it enables us to conduct larger and more complex screens, positioning us to remain competitive as expectations for automated, High-Throughput optimisation continue to grow.”

Reliability and responsiveness were critical factors in CatSci’s choice of automation partner. A key feature enhancing reliability is the inclusion of a live four-camera monitoring system around the instrument. This allows the CatSci team—and Labman engineers when needed, to remotely diagnose and even operate the MultiDose system, minimising downtime and simplifying troubleshooting.

“It simplifies troubleshooting, facilitates remote diagnostics, and even allows the Labman team to operate the MultiDose remotely when required.”

CatSci’s partnership with Labman demonstrates how advanced automation can redefine laboratory performance. Through precise engineering, strong collaboration, and a shared commitment to innovation, Labman helped CatSci unlock the full potential of high-throughput experimentation—paving the way for faster, smarter, and more efficient pharmaceutical process development.
